Fitness Profile: Katerina

What is your favorite activity that keeps you in shape?
My favorite activity is high-intensity interval training.

Aside from the gym, what are some creative ways you stay active?
I love riding bikes and hiking.

What do you eat to stay in shape/maintain energy?
I eat extremely clean (no processed foods). My diet mainly consists of lean proteins, vegetables, fruits and complex carbohydrates.

What made you aware of the importance of staying fit?
Being a Sacramento Kings Dancer has really made me see the importance of not only staying fit but eating healthy. Practicing for four hours after eating pizza does not make you feel too great. It also is hard to stay focused and have energy if you’re not fueling your body correctly.

Take us through your typical workout (cardio, weights, stretching exercises, etc.)
Typically, I circuit train with 4-5 different exercises that pinpoint two main muscle groups for 4-5 rounds. Depending on the exercises it usually takes me 45 minutes to complete. Afterwards, I normally run 2 1/2 miles

How does your diet affect you and your energy levels?
I am not perfect when it comes to eating, I fall off the band wagon a lot but the one thing that gets me back on track is how awful I feel when I’m not eating clean. I’m sluggish, I have no energy and it puts me in a bad mood.

Preparation is key to staying in shape. How do you plan ahead for your long days?
Normally, I plan, cook and store my meals the night before, so in the morning I don’t have to worry about what I’m eating for the day.

Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, what do you eat for breakfast?
I really like to eat a 1/2 cup of oatmeal with 2 tbls of better’n peanut butter, along with 4-5 egg whites with veggies.

What’s your favorite snack for on-the-go?
I tend to switch up my snacks, currently my favorite is jicama.

On average, how much rest do you get each night?
I try to make it a point to get eight hours of sleep but sometimes that doesn’t happen.

If you had one point to make about nutrition and/or exercise, what would it be?
Don’t ever think of anything as a “diet”! I hate that word because of the stigma it brings with it. Eat clean and change your lifestyle so eating healthy becomes the only way you know how to eat.

How much water do you drink a day?
Never less than 64 oz.
